Chapter 6

Summer did not want to have this conversation. Bad enough her father dumped all of the blame about Autumn on her shoulders and was bent on hating her and punishing her forever for wrecking the fragile family they’d been.

Now Colin would see the real her. Once he learned her part in all of this, he’d hate her too. That fabulous kiss—the best of her life—would become a bittersweet memory. Or just bitter.

She’d been all judgmental about the over-the-top suite and his impossible car, all because she didn’t deserve to enjoy nice things. Not after the massive mistakes she’d made. Mistakes that took an unspeakable and violent toll on her sister.

When Autumn had escaped her captors in Eagle Rock, Summer had been desperate to see her again, to apologize, to do anything possible to make up for the horrors her sister had suffered. Dread had paced that desperation stride for stride. She’d wanted to explain everything, but both the prosecutor and Autumn had refused a reunion. If—when—Autumn learned why she’d been taken, she’d never give Summer a second chance to be a good sister.

“If you’re not ready—”

“No. I’m past ready.” Maybe it was better to talk in the car, when his attention was divided and she couldn’t try and distract either of them with another kiss. When Colin leveled the full force of those changing hazel eyes on her, she couldn’t keep her thoughts lined up in an orderly fashion. He scrambled her senses with a look, or that deep laugh. And when he touched her she wanted to crawl right into his arms and stay there forever.

“There’s a reason I’m all weird about money these days. I mean part of it was growing up poor, but there’s more.”

“Beyond the guilt of enjoying life when you don’t know if your sister is able to do the same thing?”

“Do you see right through everyone?” she asked with an embarrassed sigh.

“Most of the time,” he admitted.

“Great.” She watched the scenery for a minute, doing simple equations about miles traveled and miles to go as she gathered her courage. “Recently, I’ve learned not to trust people with money. On the reservation, blatant wealth is rarely displayed.”

“You’re saying people don’t vacation in high-end hotels or drive sexy sports cars?”

Sexy? Yes, that fit him to a tee. How did manage to he make her want to laugh at a moment like this? “Not often. The past few years I’ve watched people who came into money use it to manipulate the system and influence my students.”

“You mean the gangs were recruiting.”

“Yes. Game systems for select people, laptops for others, it goes on and on.”

“Bribes that drew in fresh blood.”

“Exactly.” She pushed her hair back from her face. “There’s a low level of gang action and corruption all the time. Everywhere. It was that way when I was in school. The gangs on the reservations have changed, becoming more dangerous than ever, even amid the small, local crews. A few years back, one of my students was getting caught up and dragged in.
